The Internet of “things”

When you hear the word “internet” and being “connected,” what comes to mind? Probably your laptop, your smartphone, or your iPad. Those are the web devices of the world, no? Devices that are connected are so much more diverse than what typically occupies your briefcase or satchel, there are devices on cows, cars, clocks and more, all of which are now connected to the internet.

This week at Cisco live, it was announced that as far back as 2008, “the number of devices connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on Earth.” What a stunning concept.

Cisco calls it the rise of “the Internet of things” and shows below how all of these devices (some of which may surprise you) are connected to the web.

Rumors in the past have flown that the number of IP addresses would dry up in short order, but Cisco notes that with the next advent of IP will allot the equivalent of 100 IP addresses for every atom on the planet.
