Not all technology is awesome

I read a lot of technology blogs and although I’m no coder or widget producer, I am always excited to be on the user end of the deal and I closely study trends and tools. That said, I am fallible and can get excited about things that fall flat, no matter how amazing their potential.

Last fall, Firefox extension Ubiquity was released and I proclaimed it was the future of real estate. This may be true, but what I was wrong about was the impact it would have on MY life. Despite getting amazing traffic and offline attention by publishing the Top 35 Ubiquity Commands, and despite advances in the Ubiquity extension over time, I still don’t use it and I don’t plan on using it.

But Lani, WHY?

Why did I hype it up? Because I saw potential in its use. Why didn’t I end up adopting it? Because I was too early in the adoption phase and I lost interest because it wasn’t fully developed. Why don’t I plan on jumping back in? Because I already convinced myself that I don’t care.

This SO applies to you…

Your new blog widget, your sexy online open house, your excellent follow up emails may have clients hyped up, but if your in-person service doesn’t match what they got excited about and it falls short or ends up boring them, there may be no turning back and they may drop you for something or someone more exciting like a shinier brokerage, a robot or their Realtor drinking buddy.

I think you should give it another chance when the final version is released. Or perhaps get in touch with the creators and provide input to enhance the tool.

Programmers aren’t usually the ones using the tool in the end so try speaking up.
