New study on Facebook user behavior
A new study by NM Incite, a Nielsen McKinsey company, shows that Facebook users friend or de-friend for a variety of reasons with the top reason to follow someone being that they know that person in real life and the top person to unfollow someone is due to offensive comments.
NM Incite said, “Research suggests that real world interactions drive online friendships. Meanwhile, sales-oriented and depressing comments help drive friend removals. Facebook etiquette also plays a role, with updating too often, too little or having too many friends a consideration for some Facebook users.”
The company’s research also indicates that social media use influences these decisions as men are more likely to use social media for careers, networking and dating, while women are more likely to use social media as a creative outlet, to get coupons/promos or to give positive feedback. We are not sure we completely agree with this, but Nielsen is a reputable company with transparent methodology.
As shown in past studies, men are more likely to add someone as a friend if they are physically attractive while women are more likely to friend based on knowing someone in real life.
Below are the highlights of the study in infographic format and should be committed to memory if you are doing any marketing on Facebook, it is helpful to know why people friend or unfriend you and reiterates why you must get offline from time to time.
