Content curation for clicks – REALTORS re-think your reposting techniques

clickI notice that this happens A LOT. Rosie REALTOR is a good member of NAR and surfs the content available for agents to use to promote real estate, home ownership and all things home. She finds links to very helpful articles and decides that her friends, family and clients would benefit from reading this post. She posts this link on her Facebook profile or fanpage and feels great about “doing” social media.

Don’t get me wrong…I think those posts are great, too. I know people will benefit from reading them, but ROSIE YOU MISSED A VERY IMPORTANT STEP!

Where are the friends, family and clients going when they click the link?

(think on this…I will wait)

Ok, nevermind…the answer is: Somewhere that has nothing to do with you!

You just sent them off into the interwebs with no chaperon and missed a fabulous opportunity to gain clicks and readers on your own blog. (you do have a blog, right? No you say? Get one right now and then come scurrying back. I will wait…or not).

In all seriousness, you want to help these people, correct? You want them to consider you as the authority and the resource in real estate related matters, yes? Then you need to direct them to a point on the web that is controlled and owned by YOU.

Now you say, “But, Lesley, these are posts already written and I don’t have time to recreate the whole goshdarned thing….yadda yadda whine”. Yes. I know it. I like posts that are already done sometimes, too.

Here is how you can curate someone else’s content to garner clicks for your own site:

#1- get a blog (which I told you to do already, but I know some of you didn’t listen).

#2- when you find that fabulous post on realtor.org or some other resource, use it as inspiration.

#3- write some original content on the subject. Give it a local slant or add your personal opinion. Build on the tips offered already and THEN drop the link to the other content into your brief post.

#4- when you send out a link to Facebook or Linkedin or Twitter or your email blast, send YOUR link. Get the clicks and eyeballs on your site first.

Here is why this is really good stuff. There is a LOT of content on the internet. A lot of it is good, but often you have to sift through a lot of garbage to find the good. You are a trusted local authority. If you say a post is good, your followers will not only believe you, but they will be back to see what else you have to share.

Curating content is a killer way to quickly build up blog posts and collect clicks. Just make sure that you are always linking to the original content and giving full credit to the original source…stealing content sucks, but sharing is awesomesauce.
