The reason this is so important is because these vendors will have updates prepared for upcoming releases of Wordpress as well as upgrades to necessary to the mySQL database in most cases. I have an alternative hosting company I use for other projects that is so far behind in updates that they have nearly obsoleted themselves in the use of Wordpress or any other blogging platform. We have a pretty good relationship with bluehost, but as a flatfee hosting company, they offer a lot for very little.
