Just Who Are You Working It For?
I’ve spent a great deal of time simply observing real estate blogs around the blogosphere and a few things have really startled me.
Obviously, many in our industry are catching on little by little and opening their hearts and minds up to the masses through their blogs- and they are using a method of trial and error to master it while throwing out all common sense in the process. Small businesses such as the independent Realtor have never had such a powerful global marketing tool as they have today. The internet can be your friend, or it can destroy your credibility all together. I’m not singling anyone out in this blog, simply providing more food for thought.
If you are blogging Nationally, it is well advised that you remember that NATIONAL EXPOSURE means exactly that, good or bad- it cannot be taken back once your finger hits post.
Here are a few sins I’ve witnessed:
- Sexual Content on local/national mixed blogs
- Temper
- Arrogance
- Personal Attacks
- Unprovoked Aggression (especially sexual in nature)
- Sexist material/photos/videos
Sensitivity is imperative when imagining your reader as a minority or female. Are you marketing yourself? Or are you hiding behind the veil of being a self-proclaimed Opinion Editor who would simply state – that’s just the collateral damage of my free speech….
Just some random thoughts…
Start spreading the news...

Oh my god. Did you find my video? I swear, I was only 18, and that producer said he’d make me a star but I needed a “screen test” first. What did I know? Please don’t tell my parents.
If our fellow real estate pros are behaving like this perhaps we should send them to the Customer Service Division of the Dr. Phil web site. Hello….the customer rules and pays the bills…we just have to manage them and manage well not take out our agressions. That “draft” button is looking good here. Let it cool and simmer then serve warm rather than on fire.
Jay Thompson had a great post a couple of months ago about a guy gong berserk on him in a post. Poor fellow didn’t realize that his words are now immortal so all the world can see what a jerk he is.
I think reactionary comments are to be expected when you raise issues that folks are passionate about and can be dismissed to some degree.
However, what concerns me the most lately is the use of sexual content of any kind in RE blogs.

Unprofessional comments slap at our industry and make working relationships with clients more difficult.
