Connecting the Dots – Politics, Real Estate and the Future

Lessons from MA

The change in Massachusetts blew through with huge intensity this past week. To be sure there are some very specific NON political lessons that we can learn from that election. Will we be ready? Are we even paying attention to anything but the political ramifications? How many in real estate are standing pat by while a big wind of change bears down on them?

It’s now crystal clear that the speed of change can be enormous across any industry including ours. In Massachusetts the political race turned in a VERY short 30 day window. In real estate who will be ready for huge change….and who will become the Martha Coakleys of our business generation?

  1. Greg, Thanks for the video and thoughts, you are so right that change is coming, and when it does, it will be quicker than most imagine. Exciting times indeed!

  2. Hey, Greg. Didi you at least get a few bucks for all that product placement going on behind your head? :-)

Change is happening faster and faster. Not only from a year ago but Brown’s own “come from behind” campaign. From Scott Who? to Senator-Elect.

I recently went to a real estate tech conference and I was amazed at all the different things people are using and have available. The question in my mind comes down to: how will the home buying and selling public adapt to these technologies? Sure. I can adapt them easily enough but if my clients and prospects aren’t using them or won’t use them, they’re worthless.

You’re larger point is right on: we need to be ready.

Jeffrey….Thanks for the thoughts…..we DO need to be ready.

Ken….I’m still running around replacing all of those trophies I borrowed last week to get monetized at this point.

In general…..I think we have changed from just jumping in to any and all tech to now having to efficiently learn those tools that will directly impact our productivity.

  4. Being a successful real estate agent is really hard right now. It’s been hard for the last couple of years, and I expect it will be hard for the foreseeable future. Nothing’s happened recently to change that.

How do we prepare? What do we do? What technology do we use?

    Isn’t it simple?

We have to be better agents. The market continues to change and buyers/sellers need true professional help now more than ever. We have to work hard to know our markets better than anyone else. We have to know and care about our clients more than ever before. We have to keep up with detailed stats and know which way *our* market is headed so we can do a better job of helping our clients. Adopt technology that helps you do these things. If it doesn’t, then it’s not worth your time.

Four square, twitter, and so many others are all a waste of time. They really are. Maintain a blog to help serve your clients and educate consumers. If your clients and customers are on Facebook, use that to help facilitate meaningful conversations. Stop talking about yourself and what you did today and start talking to and educating your customers. Find technology to help you add more value and be more efficient.

I think I’ve read too many “how do I use social media and technology?” articles. I’ve hit my quota. Work harder. Care more. Be smarter.
