Blog Action Day

Today marks the second annual Blog Action Day in which the goal is for all bloggers to be focusing for one day on a single cause, this year it’s fighting poverty in an effort to raise awareness and encourage a global discussion.

Craig Barrett

Craig Barrett, Washington DC area Realtor is a runner. When I say runner I don’t mean that he jogs on the treadmill for a few minutes a year (like me) but that he’s a very serious marathon runner. He’s even the President of the Hughesville Running Club which will be hosting the Hughesville 10k Festival this Saturday, October 18th. Instead of raising money for a social or for fancy headquarters, they are collecting non-perishable canned goods for the Southern Maryland Food Bank in their time of critical need.

According to the Hughesville Running Club, “Supplies at the food bank are the worst they’ve been and at a time when more people might need their services.” The Food Bank has received a lot of local coverage about the extreme shortage and about how today more than ever in difficult financial times, the Food Bank is serving more and more families as their supplies dwindle putting them in a very critical position of need.

We applaud Craig’s leadership with the Hughesville Running Club to focus on their community; the poverty of their very neighbors and friends and for running for a good cause! So much hunger goes unnoticed within our own cities, on our own streets, and if you are in the Maryland area, please consider participating or take a moment to contribute to the food bank. We appreciate Craig’s efforts to fight poverty, thank you Craig!

  1. Food banks are a crucial lifeline for the poor. I think it is fabulous that the running club and Craig Barrett are dedicating themselves to help the needy and less fortunate! Keep on running for a good cause!

  2. Lani, thank you very much for the highlight and the awareness. Local food banks are feeling the pinch, just like the rest of us, and at time when their need is most. In addition to the economic conditions, recent disasters have been life-altering for many families across the country, more recently the Texas gulf region.

Thanks Ginger, we will keep running for good causes, it’s in our blood to do so!

  3. Mack says:

With the economy in it’s current shape, it’s no wonder that the food banks are in such poor shape. One comment made at a meeting I attended yesterday was that many of the people who were helping fill the food banks last year are in line to be helped by them this year. In Gwinnett County GA (North East Metro Atlanta) the food bank is empty and people are being turned away. Let’s all get with our friends, our communities, churches or whatever organizations you can think of to pull together to help those less fortunate during their time of need.
