Case-Shiller data chart
In 2006, the New York Times ran a graphic outlining the Case-Shiller home price index over the previous 100 years. In 2008, Steve Barry updated the graphic to include more recent versions including the “projected Home Price mean reversion” through 2010.
Today, the Big Picture Blog posted Barry’s update for 2011 which puts a lot of the housing sector into perspective with history:

So we had a meteoric rise and now the equivalent fall. I don't get how we can have such a huge rise over a 6 or 7 year period and then expect to be "back to normal" after a 2 or 3 year fall.
I'd say this looks about like what we can expect. Hopefully, when we hit that nice leveling spot in 2015-ish, we can remember this and not let the meteor take off happen again.

Matt, my fear is that all economies are cyclical. We'll be up again but then there's only one direction to go after that…

Pretty scary if you ask me! Makes me wonder when we will finally reach the bottom…2012 or 2013?
