TINYpulse: powerful employee retention tool

We introduced you to TINYpulse, which we admired for their feedback loop wherein employees are emailed a simple question every week, and their anonymous answers determine the happiness levels of employees and pinpoint frustrations team members are experiencing. Both positive and negative questions are asked of everyone under the shield of anonymity, giving employees a safe haven for feedback. Simple.

A few months later, we’ve learned some of the creative ways companies are using the tool, and about some interesting outcomes of using this type of technology at companies of all sizes.

1. If your company were an animal, what would it be and why?

Mojo Media Labs in Dallas used TINYpulse which generated questions to ask their employees, one of which caught our attention: “If your company were an animal, what would it be and why?”

Mike Rose, author and CEO of Mojo Media Labs said, “Someone said a cheetah because it is fast, nimble and strong. Someone else actually said a ‘baby’ cheetah, because we are still growing, learning, but getting faster and stronger each day.”

Although the animal was the same, the answers were dramatically different, which generated a company conversation on the topic. “We have very clearly defined core values. Collaboration. Creativity. Passion. Professional Development. Reliability. Ridiculous Results. The animal question answers lead to the conversation around Professional Development. We are continuously learning… turning this information into knowledge that we can use for the benefit of our clients. So, therefore, does the cheetah ever stop growing? Does any of us?”

Rose says the the question that allowed for employees to answer anonymously, “was a learning and bonding experience. It was interesting to see how people not just see themselves, but see themselves representing our core values which are the basis of every decision in our company.”

Rose explains in more detail how the tool has impacted his business:

2. Wpromote physically displays answers

We were pleased that one company took this invaluable feedback and have created a beautiful eye-catching display. Michael Mothner, CEO of Wpromote expressed how excited and grateful employees are when they receive Cheers for Peers recognition.

David Niu, the founder of TINYpulse said of Wpromote’s approach, “We love it and want to emulate it too.”

3. A CEO that changed direction

Ben Jesson, CEO of Conversion Rate Experts, thought that they would score highly on the “How transparent do you think management is?” But he was shocked when it was lower than he thought and because he highly prizes transparency.

So he created a Custom Question via TINYpulse that was simply three words… “Ask us anything.” His commitment was that he was going to read and respond to each and every one at their next company meeting. He said it was a home run hit, and he got great feedback immediately and in the following week’s TINYpulse.

In fact, Jesson demonstrates his transparency in hiring, putting his Happiness score front and center.
